The key to energy efficiency is not needing to use it the first place - hence the big push on building houses that need little in the way of heating. Once you've ensured that you have insulated and reduced air leakage as much as possible along with installing appropriate ventilation, then it might be the time to take a look at what technology you can add to the house.
• Easy wins are the panels you can stick on the roof. Payback times are diminishing rapidly. These panels can be both solar panels that produce electricity as well as those providing you with hot water. Both work really well when the sun is out, but don't when it isn't. Back up in the way of, say, gas water heating and mains electricity are essential.
• If you have the financial resources, consider heat pumps. Ground Source Heat Pumps are at their best where you are off grid. Air Source Heat Pumps are likewise but can be more easily and cheaply integrated whether on grid or not. Either way, make sure you get independent advice before writing cheques!
